One of the biggest complaints about Windows 8.1 is the new Metro Start screen. There are some that love it but the vast majority cannot stand it. There are users, like myself, that have learned to tweak and utilize the Metro tiles but most boot up and head directly to the Desktop. At that point they treat the interface like the old Windows and press on. I am not an advocate of that stance but I am here to make your life easier. How would you like to avoid the Metro tiles all together? Follow the steps below and your machine will boot directly to the Desktop every time.
1. From the Desktop, right click the Windows key.
2. Click Search
3. At the Search window type “taskbar”
4. Click Taskbar and Navigation
5. Under the Start Screen section, click When I sign in or close all apps on a screen, go to the desktop instead of Start
6. Click Ok
7. Restart your computer
When your computer boots up and you log in again you will be taken directly to the Desktop.
If you do not like to log in every time you can modify that as well by following the steps in How to Bypass the Startup Screen.
