It doesn’t make sense that Google was keeping Picasa Web Albums alive when it recently released Google Photos and has been focusing most of its resources into it. Google Photos is the newer project that acts as a Picasa Replacement and supersedes the dated software in every way.
Yesterday, Google announced that it will no longer support the Picasa desktop application as of March 16, 2016. Furthermore, the company stated that it would be archiving all Picasa Web Albums data at a later date and that it would be encouraging users to switch to Google Photos Instead.
Google is also aware that there is great concern from its devoted population (whoever that may be) and has made it clear that the switch incredibly smooth and easy.
“We know for many of you, a great deal of care has gone into managing your photos and videos using Picasa—including the hours you’ve invested and the most precious moments you’ve trusted us with,” “So we will take some time in order to do this right and provide you with options and easy ways to access your content,” he added. writes Anil Sabharwal, Head of Google Photos on a blog post
If you are running the software or if you download it before the shutdown date it will continue to work but the program will receive no more updates and will be left to rot. However, Google hasn’t been actively updating the program as it was and the program has only received minor bug fixes, security patches, and minor tweaks here and there. The program hasn’t received a major update in several years and it was left dead in the water so to speak.
While this shutdown is likely to cause some worry amongst its users the transition process is fairly easy and the new Google Photos is extremely easy to use, offers better tools, and has a more modern user interface. We recommend that everyone who is still using Picasa Web Albums to make the switch to Google Photos to keep all of your data in an easier to use program.
If you are looking for a desktop uploader like the one you received in Picasa Google has developed one for Google Photos that can be downloaded from their website.
